Referencing PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) using APA referencing.

We’ve had a few enquiries recently about how to reference the PRISMA flow chart using the APA 6th Swansea style of referencing.

Below is an example of how to do this in text and in the reference list.

In-text: (Figure 1 in italics). Give the PRISMA flow chart a title, e.g.:

Figure 1.  PRISMA flow chart showing etc  (Moher, Liberati, Tetzlaff, & Altman, 2009).

In the reference list:

Moher, D., Liberati, A., Tetzlaff, J., & Altman, D. G. (2009). Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses: The PRISMA statement. PLoS Medicine, 6(7), e1000097. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmed.1000097
