We’ve had a number of queries this week relating to citing tools which are used when nursing students are on placement. Here are some guidelines on how to cite these tools in your assignment. Please remember to adhere to the NMC code (2015) and DO NOT mention ward names, use Health Board names instead.
Firstly you need to establish the origin of the tool – Is it a Health Board derived tool or an All Wales tool, there may be some form of reference on the tool to help you establish this.
Therefore if it is a Health Board tool it should be referenced as the following example:
Name of Health Board. (date of publication). Name of tool. Place of Publication: Name of Health Board.
If there is information missing you can use:
(n.d.). If no date on the document
(n.p.) If no place of Publication on the document
If you are referring to the NEWS it was derived from the Royal College of Physicians (2012), and would be referenced as:
Royal College of Physicians. (2012). National Early Warning Score (NEWS): Standardising the assessment of acute-illness severity in the NHS. Retrieved from https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/projects/outputs/national-early-warning-score-news
However please note that if your ward is using an adapted version of NEWS you must say it has been adapted from the Royal College of Physicians (2012).
