End-of-life care and physician-assisted dying

The British Medical Association (BMA) have published (Jan 2016) part of the  results of a project on end-of-life care. It will comprise 3 volumes once fully completed, and it is hoped will help to better inform the debate.

Volume 1 (“Setting the Scene”) provides an excellent overview of the issues and the debate. It contains a literature review bringing together information from government & professional bodies as well as research from the journal literature.

Chapter 1 includes statistics and research evidence  on current provision of end-of-life care in the UK, as well as attitudes of public and health professionals.

Chapter 2 looks at some of the practical issues, for example the Mental Capacity Act.

Chapter 3 of this volume, will be of interest as it concerns the questions of assisted dying in the UK.

Chapter 4 looks at the international debate on assisted dying.
