When writing your assignments and you want to refer to a particular law here are some tips for you if you are using APA style referencing.
Acts should not be included in APA reference lists at all. However, on the first mention of the act a full citation is given in the text of your assignment. For example:
Children Act 1989
If you choose to abbreviate an Act’s title by using initials you must show this when you first mention the Act. For example:
Children Act 1989 [CA]
Then any subsequent cites you can just refer to the acronym. For example:
If you want to refer to a specific section of the Act you can do one of the following:
S.1 of the Children Act 1989 states that….
According to s.1 of the Children Act 1989….
The welfare of the child must be the ‘paramount consideration’ of the court (Children Act 1989, s.1)
